FPCCI asked to support govt’s steps for economic growth

ISLAMABAD: The newly-elected office-bearers of the country’s apex trade body would play their role in accelerating economic growth, an government minister said on Saturday.

Greeting the United Business Group (UBG) Central Chairman Iftikhar Ali Malik and President Ghazanfar Bilour on their victories in the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) annual elections, federal Commerce and Textile Minister Pervaiz Malik assured of all-out support to the business community in removing bottlenecks, which are hampering speedy development.

He said the government is taking a number of measures to increase the volume of overall exports. Pakistani products failed to get proper market share due to high input cost, and the government is taking remedial measures to resolve the issue, he added.

Malik thanked the federal minister for his wishes and assured support to the business-friendly policies of the government. “We hope the federal commerce minister will make every effort to accomplish economic revitalisation and an escape from deflation, while steadily implementing growth strategies.”

He urged the government to offer special package of power and gas tariffs for rapid industrial growth on the pattern of China.

UBG believes in the rule of law, promotion of democratic norms, and supremacy of the constitution, besides complete transparency in the affairs of the federation, Malik said.

According to a statement issued by UBG, the business leaders urged the group to evolve a roadmap for year 2018 and ensure its implementation in true spirit. They said outgoing FPCCI body under the leadership of UBG had made the federation corruption-free and hoped the new body would follow their footmarks. The leaders were urged to keep core committees on as it would help them consult and get feedback from top to bottom.

UBG candidates made a clean sweep in the annual elections of the federation defeating all the candidates of Pakistan Businessman Panel and Pakistan Business Group for the fourth consecutive time, the statement added.

UBG trade leaders thanked the voters and supporters for reposing trust on their policies and vowed to continue their agenda mainly aimed at accelerating the pace of economic development.

UBG Chairman Iftikhar Ali Malik said the result of election indicated confidence of the business community in the UBG policies. “We firmly believe in rule of law, promotion of democratic system and strengthening of national economy by safeguarding the interests of traders,” he added.

SM Muneer hailed the business community for reposing confidence in UBG in the larger interests of the economy.

FPCCI President Ghazanfar Bilour said he would try his best to serve the interests of the business community.

Business fraternity across the country felicitated the UBG for sweeping all FPCCI seats with a majority.

Pakistan Furniture Council Chief Mian Kashif Ashfaq Ghazanfar Bilour also congratulated the UBG for winning through a democratic process for the year 2018. The office-bearers of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) too congratulated the Patron-in-Chief of UBG for the landslide victory.

In a joint statement, KATI President Tariq Malik, Senior Vice President Mohammad Salman Aslam, and Vice President Junaid Naqi congratulated UBG Patron-In Chief SM Muneer and the newly elected office-bearers.

KATI office bearers hope that Ghazanfar Bilour would leave no stone unturned to resolve the concerns and problems of the business community.

BEIRUT: The head of the powerful Iraqi militia Harakat al-Nujaba pledged on Tuesday to stand alongside its Lebanese ally Hizbullah if a new war breaks out with Israel. Harakat al-Nujaba and Hizbullah have fought side-by-side to bolster Syrian government troops since 2013, most prominently against the Islamic State group in eastern Syria. On Tuesday, the movement’s secretary general Akram al-Kaabi visited the tomb of top Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniyeh to commemorate the 10 years since his death. "We in the Iraqi resistance stand with Hizbullah, and we will stand with Hizbullah in any Israeli attack or action against it," Kaabi said. He pledged to fight "with Hizbullah in a single row, on a single front, just as we stood with them on a single front in Iraq or Syria." Kaabi spoke in Beirut’s southern suburbs, where Hizbullah has a strong support base. Both Harakat al-Nujaba and Hizbullah are backed by Iran. They fought alongside Syrian government troops and othe...
